The California Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California requires the applicant to prove his or her expertise within the field of family law. Attorneys who receive certification as family law specialists have demonstrated success and possess extensive experience within this field of law. In order to become a certified family law specialist by the State Bar of California, the lawyer must fulfill the following requirements:

• Engaged in the specific area of law for at least 25% of the past 25 years
• Is an active member of the State Bar of California
• Passed a detailed written exam
• Demonstrated a high level of experience
• Demonstrated a high level of achievement
• Completed a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education in their field of law
• Is in favorable standing with peers and judges
